Frequently asked questions
Seven things people actually ask. Every kill. Every hour. Ranked. Every number comes straight from Steam — nothing estimated, nothing scraped from game servers.
01Where does the data come from?
From Steam itself, and nowhere else. Steam publishes the counters your account records in-game — kills, deaths, headshot hits, shots fired, every resource harvested, every way you have died, every structure placed. There are roughly 150 of them, and we show only the ones Steam actually reports for that account.
Your name, avatar, country, account age, hours played, achievements and ban status come from Steam too.
We do not connect to game servers, we do not read server logs or Rust+ data, and we do not copy numbers out of another tracker. If Steam does not report it, it is not on this site. The one exception is Server Lookup, which queries BattleMetrics for public server metadata — that is information about a server, never about a player.
02Why can't I see my stats?
Steam privacy, almost every time. Two separate settings gate the stat block and both have to be set to Public — a public profile with private game details still returns nothing.
- In the Steam client: Steam → your name in the top bar → Profile → Edit Profile → Privacy Settings. In a browser, the same page is at steamcommunity.com → your avatar → Profile → Edit Profile → Privacy Settings.
- Set My profile to Public.
- Set Game details to Public. This is the one people miss — it is what makes your Rust stats readable at all.
Steam applies the change immediately. Our copy updates the next time the profile is opened and the stored copy is more than 15 minutes old, so reload once, wait, and reload again if you were impatient.
If both are already Public and the page is still empty, the account has probably never launched Rust — Steam only returns a stat block once the game has actually written one.
03Why do my hours show as zero?
Because of a third switch, separate from the two above. Under Game details there is a checkbox: “Always keep my total playtime private, even if users can see my game details”. With it ticked, Steam still hands over your stats but reports playtime as 0 rather than refusing the request.
When an account clearly has a Rust record — stats, achievements, a kill count — and playtime comes back as zero, the playtime is private, not absent. In that case we render Hidden. We never print a fake 0h and we never estimate hours from anything else.
Untick the box if you want hours counted. Hidden playtime also means no position on the Hours and Active boards, because there is no number to rank.
04How do I search for a player?
Paste any of these into the search box:
- A SteamID64 — 17 digits, starts with 7656, e.g. 76561198277521971.
- A full profile URL — https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198277521971.
- A vanity URL — https://steamcommunity.com/id/yourname, or just the vanity name on its own. We resolve it through Steam.
The legacy forms STEAM_1:1:158628121 and [U:1:317256243] work too. If you type a display name we already track, the box suggests matches as you type — but display names are not unique on Steam, so an ID is the only input that is guaranteed to be the right person.
Not sure of your own ID? Open your Steam profile in a browser: if the address bar shows /profiles/, the number after it is your SteamID64.
05How fresh is the data?
Two mechanisms keep it current, and every profile page states when its numbers were taken.
- On view. Open a profile and, if the copy we hold is more than 15 minutes old, we re-fetch from Steam before showing it. Inside that window you get the copy we already hold, which is why a second look is instant.
- In the background. An hourly job sweeps tracked players — anyone searched here at least once — so leaderboard positions do not go stale between visits.
The leaderboard itself is recomputed every 10 minutes; the countdown on that page is the real timer, not decoration.
06How does the leaderboard work?
There is no sign-up and no opt-in. Every Steam account that has ever been searched on this site is ranked, which means the board describes the players we track — not all 15 million people who own Rust. We say so on the page rather than calling it a global ranking.
Three groups are excluded:
- Accounts with a VAC ban or a game ban on record.
- Private profiles — no stats means nothing to rank.
- Profiles removed after an upheld stat-boosting report.
Six sorts are available — kills, hours, K/D, headshots, active hours in the last two weeks, and resources farmed — and each is ranked independently. Tier badges are percentile bands over the ranked population, not fixed thresholds, so PLATINUM stays the top 1% however large the board grows.
07Can I hide my profile from this site?
Yes, and you do not need to ask us. Set your Steam profile — or just Game details — to Private in Edit Profile → Privacy Settings. From that moment Steam stops handing us your stats.
At the next refresh the profile drops off the leaderboard and stops displaying numbers. For a tracked player that is within the hour; you can force it sooner by opening your own profile page once the 10-minute cache has expired.
If you want the stored record deleted outright rather than frozen, email [email protected] with the SteamID64 and we will remove it. See the privacy policy for what is held and for how long.
