Stashes and Hidden Rooms in Rust: How to Hide Loot from Raiders

How to hide loot in Rust: small stash, pixel gaps, fake-raided bases, ghost bunkers, dropbox setups and externals. Make raiders leave with nothing.

Introduction

In Rust a raid isn't a question of "if", it's a question of "when". Even the best base gets opened eventually: offline raids happen every night, and a clan with 50 rockets will flatten any fortress. That's why experienced players don't rely on wall HP — they hide loot where the raider can't find it. Stashes, hidden rooms, fake trails and "ghost bases" are a second line of defence that often saves more than honeycomb does.

This guide covers every proven way to hide loot in Rust, from a plain small stash to advanced pixel gaps and suicide bunkers. Tips gathered from r/playrust and rust.fandom.com (2024-2026).

Small Stash: your personal hiding spot

The Small Stash is the simplest way to hide loot: a little pouch you bury in the ground that becomes almost invisible.

Stats:

  • 6 inventory slots.
  • Craft: 10 Cloth, 30 seconds.
  • Buried in the ground (E), visually almost invisible.
  • To retrieve it, stand right next to it (radius ~2 metres) and look at the spot for a few seconds — a prompt appears.
  • Decays after 3 real days if you don't check it — go visit your stashes!

How to use them:

  • Don't put everything in one stash — spread out: 3-5 stashes in different places.
  • Don't stash next to your base on an obvious path — grubs check the popular spots (bushes, rocks by the roads).
  • Good spots: thick bushes, under rocks, in water near the shore, under bridges, in "dead" zones nobody walks through.
  • What to stash: spare components, HQM, blueprint papers, finished explosives, backup armour.

Tip from r/playrust: "A trained eye spots the little mound — don't stash on flat open ground. Bushes or gaps between rocks are better."

Pixel gaps

An advanced technique for solos and duos: one-pixel gaps between blocks, doors and walls where you can slip loot in. A raider who doesn't know the gap is there will never find it — even after searching the whole base.

  • Gaps appear between door frames, walls and floors in certain layouts.
  • A small box, or individual items, will fit inside.
  • The technique takes practice: watch pixel gap loot video guides and drill it on a creative server.

Externals and spreading loot out

The principle: never keep everything in one place. A raider who cracks the core shouldn't get all of it — part of your loot belongs in separate small bases.

  • Externals — small 1x1 storage bases 50-100 metres from the main one: the loot lives there, and the main base is a decoy with a couple of boxes.
  • Keep your boom separate — a box in the external TC room, a stash in the compound, a small box in a hidden honeycomb cell behind a wall.
  • Loot room in a triangle off a footpath TC — "my TC is in one triangle, 5 triangles of loot next to it; raiders crack the TC and leave without finding the loot."

The "fake raided" base: look like you've been cleaned out

A technique that's catching on (and gets praise on r/playrust): make your base look like it's already been raided.

  • Blow open holes around the core (knock out a few exterior walls).
  • Scatter junk loot around the entrance (empty cans, cloth, wood).
  • Raiders see an empty shell and walk on — why spend explosives on a base someone already looted?

The "live in a raided base" variant (an r/playrust tip, "I found the secret to never get offlined"): after a raid, take the TC of the wrecked base, patch the holes and live in a hidden room. Nobody comes to raid an empty shell twice.

Ghost bunkers and suicide bunkers

  • Ghost bunker — a hidden room with no entrance from outside: the only way in is a crawlway that seals from the inside. A raider physically cannot get into the room without breaking a floor or wall.
  • Suicide bunker — a compact setup where you die inside and respawn next to the loot (sleeping bag or bed in the room), while the raider can't get in without "killing himself" — that is, without losing his life and armour. Excellent protection against grubs.

The dropbox setup: expensive and painful

A dropbox is a small 1-slot box with 200 HP. The idea: line the interior with dropboxes — the raider has to blow through every wall and every dropbox to find anything valuable.

  • Dropboxes are cheap to craft and need explosives to open.
  • Every evening, dump your loot into dropboxes in different parts of the base.
  • A raider who cracks the core finds 10 dropboxes of cloth and 1 with HQM — and has no idea which is which.

Hiding the TC

The Tool Cupboard is the raider's main target. If the TC isn't visible from outside, grubs and raiders have to hunt for it — burning their time and their explosives on extra walls.

  • Put the TC somewhere non-obvious: not in the middle of the ground floor, but in a side room behind two doors.
  • "My TC in one triangle, loot in another" — raiders break the TC room and leave, thinking the base is empty.
  • 1 rocket = 312.5 damage: keep loot behind 2+ walls so the raid doesn't pay off.

FAQ

How many stashes does a solo need?

At least 3-5 stashes in different spots plus 1-2 externals. Split them up: components, HQM/boom, spare armour — each separate.

Can other players see stashes?

Barely — they blend into the ground. But experienced players spot the mounds and check the popular locations. Hide them in bushes and unusual spots.

What do I do if my base is being raided right now?

If you're online, fight back. If you're offline, your stashes and externals are what matter: the raider opens the base but doesn't find the real loot. After the raid, check every stash — any that went 3 days unchecked may be gone.

Is it worth hiding loot outside the base?

Yes, it's a core solo strategy: 30-50% of your valuables (boom, HQM, spare gear) should live outside the base. Then even a full raid isn't a disaster.

Conclusion

Walls in Rust are only your first line of defence. Real protection is loot distribution: stashes, externals, fake bases and hidden rooms. Raiders are lazy and pragmatic: if cracking a base doesn't pay out instantly, they move on. Make your loot impossible to find and raids become background noise instead of a catastrophe. Stack the techniques — stash plus external plus fake trails plus a dropbox setup — and you'll survive even the most aggressive wipe.
