What a barrel of diesel is worth
Every machine burns diesel at a fixed rate and pays out a fixed amount per barrel, so the whole thing is arithmetic once you know the two numbers. Ore is only half the job — the furnace column is the other half.
Pick the machine
Quarries and the pump jack run 2 minutes 10 seconds per barrel; the excavator runs 2 minutes. Which quarry you have is decided by the biome and the survey charge, not by you.
Diesel in
Barrels are whole: the machine takes one at a time and there is no such thing as half a diesel. Diesel is bought at Outpost for 300 low grade fuel or looted from the usual monuments.
Count the barrels you are actually going to put in the tank.
The large furnace burns a fifth of the wood a small one does per ore, and is five times faster. An electric furnace burns no wood at all.
What it digs up
Per hour is the same rate expressed as continuous running — nobody stands there feeding barrels for an hour, but it is the number to compare machines with.

Ore smelts one for one — a thousand sulfur ore is a thousand sulfur. What the furnace costs you is wood and time, and the smelt time above assumes the furnace never sits empty.
