Automation in Rust: Turrets, Traps and the Smart Home
Rust automation guide 2026: auto turrets, shotgun traps, tesla coils, trap corridors, sensors, TC alarms and Rust+ smart home. Wiring, numbers and limits.

Introduction
A base in Rust that relies on walls alone is a base that gets taken. Real defense is automatic: turrets that shoot without you, traps that kill in one hit, and an alarm that wakes you up when someone touches your TC. Automation is what lets a solo player sleep and a clan repel an online raid without losses.
This guide covers turrets, traps and the smart home: stats, limits, wiring diagrams and ready-made setups. The numbers are cross-checked against rust.fandom.com, the rustrician.io handbook and guides from 2024-2026.
The Auto Turret: the backbone of your defense
The Auto Turret is your main defensive tool:
- 10 rW draw, 1,000 HP.
- 180° field of view, 30 meter range (~10 foundations).
- Spins 180° when attacked from behind.
- Magazine: 1,536 × 5.56, Low Ammo warning at ≤50 rounds.
- Craft: 10 HQM + CCTV Camera + Targeting Computer, workbench 2, 120 scrap to research. Buy at Outpost for 400 scrap.
Damage to a turret: Rocket 312.5 (3 rockets → 63 HP), HV Rocket 187.4 (5 rockets), AK ~5/bullet, Bolt ~7/bullet.

Turret modes
- Attack All (default) — shoots at anything that moves. Required for remote control.
- Peacekeeper — only shoots aggressors (anyone who hits or shoots). Blocks remote control, laser turns green.
Remote control
Computer Station or the Rust+ App: set the turret's ID, type it into the station, and shoot with your mouse. View range when controlling remotely is ~63 meters (21 foundations).
The interference limit: 12 turrets
The key limit: a maximum of 12 active turrets within a 40 meter radius (13.5 foundations). The thirteenth simply won't turn on.
- Plan your placement: no closer than ~12 meters between turrets (11.6 m minimum).
- The "43 turret" layout: 40 m circles with 7 inside + 6 around the perimeter — that's how large compounds are built.
- The Shotgun Trap (see below) does not count toward the limit — use it to work around the cap.
Shotgun Trap: the instant kill
The Shotgun Trap is the trap that makes up for the turret limit:
- 2 shots per second, 384 rounds = 192 seconds of continuous fire (3 min 12 sec).
- 300 HP. Craft: 250 Metal Fragments (30 sec), Handmade Shells only.
- Destroyed by 60×5.56.
- Instant kill even through armor — a classic for hallways and doorways.

Trap corridors: a Timer plus shotgun traps on a trigger (pressure plate / laser detector) — a full volley the moment a raider walks in. Timers are usually set to 3-10 seconds.
Other traps
- Tesla Coil + Heartbeat Sensor — kills AFK raiders stacking explosives against your wall. The classic instant-kill trap base.
- Flame Turret — a cheap alternative (LGF instead of 5.56), great against wood and infantry at point-blank range.
- Minefields — for open approaches to the base.
The smart home: automating your life
- TC Alarm — laser detector/HBHF on the TC → siren/phone (Rust+ App). Early warning is worth more than another turret: you find out about a raid minutes before the explosions start.
- Smart Switch / Smart Alarm / Storage Monitor + Rust+ App — control lights and doors and monitor boxes from your phone.
- Auto-opening doors — HBHF sensor + door controller: the door opens for your own team (by authorization).
- Off-base storage — Rust+ lets you watch your bases remotely without ever walking up to them.
Backup power: turrets that never go dark
The most common mistake is turrets running off bare solar panels: at night the base goes blind. The fix is a backup circuit:
- 1 windmill + 1 Large Battery + Blocker/OR logic = 9 turrets stay online when main power drops (rusttips.com circuit).
- Battery backup outputs a maximum of 100 rW — that's the ceiling for turrets on backup.
- Rustrician circuit: https://www.rustrician.io/?circuit=cdd7f4cb04946ed4cb88cdc15ed52d69
- Backup generator + turret: https://www.rustrician.io/?circuit=335a2bdc164616f75081469a3ca4416d
Placement details
- Turrets shoot through: Prison Cell Wall/Gate, Floor Grill, Chainlink, half walls, window bars, twig — use this for hidden positions (killer tunnels, the "turret under the garage door").
- Hide wiring and batteries inside walls — raiders knock out your power first.
- Flip-flop turrets — energy saving: turrets switch on in turns, driven by a sensor. Useful on large circuits.
- Don't over-engineer the logic: AND/OR/Memory Cell cover 90% of tasks. The XOR wizards are usually the ones whose turrets are switched off.
Summary table
| Device | HP | Power | Key trait |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto Turret | 1,000 | 10 rW | 180°, 30 m, limit of 12 within 40 m |
| Shotgun Trap | 300 | 0 rW (mechanical) | 2 shots/sec, instant kill |
| Tesla Coil | — | ~10 rW | Instant kill, needs a Heartbeat Sensor |
| Flame Turret | 500 | 10 rW + LGF | Fire damage, cheap to run |
| Ceiling Light | — | 2 rW | The only light plants react to |
FAQ
How many turrets can I place?
A maximum of 12 active turrets within a 40 meter radius. After that use shotgun traps, mines and other traps (they don't count toward the limit).
What do turrets shoot?
5.56 ammo, magazine of 1,536. At ≤50 rounds the turret beeps Low Ammo. A full magazine is about 2 stacks of ammo.
How do I protect a turret from a raid?
Hidden positions behind prison cell wall / chainlink (turrets shoot through them), plus backup power. Raiders hit turrets first — don't put them in exposed spots.
Does automation work without electricity?
Shotgun traps, mines and other traps — yes, they're mechanical. Everything else (turrets, sensors, doors) needs power. Without batteries and panels the smart home is dead.
How do I know my base is being raided while I'm offline?
A TC Alarm through the Rust+ App — a phone notification the moment someone touches the TC. Plus a Storage Monitor, so you can see if anything vanished from your boxes. The best insurance a solo can get.
Conclusion
Automation turns a base from a pile of walls into a living fortress: turrets hold the perimeter, traps kill in the hallways, and the Rust+ App watches everything from your phone. Start small: 2-3 turrets with backup power and a TC Alarm. Then add a trap corridor and smart doors. Respect the interference limit (12 turrets / 40 m), hide your wiring and always keep power in reserve — and your base will defend itself, even while you sleep.
