Surviving the First Day of a Wipe in Rust: The 2026 Strategy

Full Rust wipe day strategy 2026: what to do in the first hours, where to go, how to get a base up fast and bank blueprints. Solo and duo wipe day checklist.

Introduction

Wipe day is the most important and the most chaotic day in a server's life. At 19:00 UTC (or on the server's own schedule) every base disappears and hundreds of players hit an empty map at the same time. The first 6 hours decide who dominates the week. For solos and small groups, wipe day is a race: get a base up before the neighbours, claim a farm zone and bank blueprints before the mass raiding starts.

This guide lays out a proven first-day strategy, put together from r/playrust experience and current 2024-2026 guides. You will learn what to do in the first 10 minutes, the first hour, the first three and the first six — and how not to throw the wipe away on stupid mistakes.

Prep Before the Wipe

A wipe does not start at the reset — it starts an hour before it.

  1. Pick your server in advance (vanilla or 2x, population, region — ping under 50 ms).
  2. Download the map (if it is a known procedural seed) and mark it up: roads, monuments, safe zones. You can usually view the server map on the server's site or Discord.
  3. Check the wipe schedule: the official force wipe is the first Thursday of the month at 19:00 UTC — track it with the wipe timer. Community servers wipe more often — once a week, often on Friday evening or over the weekend.
  4. Plan your first 3 hours: where the base goes, which monument you loot first, when you go for keycards.

The rule for picking a spot: on wipe day your base should sit between your spawn and the monument you plan to farm. A solo guide from r/playrust: "day one you are not a warrior, you are a farmer. Put your base 200-300 metres from a road and 500 metres from an easy monument (Sewer Branch, Water Treatment)."

The First 10 Minutes: Spawn and Tools

  • Gather 200 wood + 50 stone and craft a stone hatchet and a stone pickaxe.
  • Gather another 500 wood for Workbench 1 and 1000 wood for the Tool Cupboard.
  • Do not take fights — on the beach everyone is equal in the first minutes, but the first victims turn up around minute 5. Walk around players if you can.
  • Move towards your chosen base spot along the road, hitting barrels (scrap!) and picking up resources on the way.

Hour 1: The Base Is Up

Your job in the first hour is to get the base placed and authorise on the TC — otherwise by evening somebody else has taken the spot, or it has rotted away.

Minimum starter (1×1 or 2×1):

  • Foundation (1-2 pieces), walls, roof — wood, upgraded to stone at the first opportunity.
  • Tool Cupboard inside (1000 wood), authorise on it (E).
  • Door (wooden) + lock (100 wood) — set a code.
  • Sleeping bag (30 cloth) or bed (40 wood + 30 cloth).
  • Workbench 1 (500 wood) — next to the TC.
  • Box (wooden box, 200 wood).

The hour-one mistake: building a wooden 3×3 with six rooms. A wooden base is an invitation to raid. A 1×1 in stone survives the night; a wooden mansion does not.

Hours 2-3: Upgrades and Blueprints

The base is up — now earn for the future:

  1. Upgrade the base to stone (outer walls and roof at minimum). Stone: ~1500-3000 for a small base.
  2. Collect scrap (roadside barrels, recycle whatever you do not need) — target: 300-500 scrap by the end of the day.
  3. Research the key items: workbench 2, stone pickaxe (if you do not have it), sheet metal door, satchel (for raids), medical syringe, water bottle. Priority goes to whatever you use every day.
  4. Buy keycards at Bandit Camp: green (15 scrap), blue (40). Red (80) can wait.

Blueprints are your guarantee that if you die, you do not start from zero. Research everything valuable you find before you lose it.

Hours 3-6: Monuments and Your First PvP

  • Sewer Branch — the first monument of the day: a simple puzzle (parkour), and a green card opens the loot room with Tier-2 loot. Go naked or in a minimal kit: there is almost no radiation and almost no scientists inside.
  • Water Treatment Plant — no radiation, lots of crates. A good second run.
  • Dome — guaranteed military crates up top, but radiation inside (you need a hazmat). If you have a hazmat, this is the best scrap on wipe day.

When do you start doing PvP? 3-4 hours into the wipe, once you have a stone base and at least a Thompson or Custom SMG. Before that, every fight is a gamble where losing costs you 30 minutes of progress.

Reddit Advice That Actually Works

  • "Do not build next to other people's bases." The neighbour who turned up an hour after you and says nothing is a future raider or a grub. Keep 1-2 screens between you and other builds.
  • "Spend wood on upkeep, not furniture." The TC should always be full: day one upkeep is the cheapest there is, and letting it run dry means losing the base.
  • "Scrap is for blueprints, not shopping." Do not blow your first 500 scrap on vendors — put it into research.
  • "Day one is the only day you can farm without a gun." Use it: until people get AKs, the forests and roads are relatively safe.

FAQ

What time does Rust wipe?

The official force wipe is the first Thursday of the month, ~19:00 UTC. Community servers wipe on their own schedule (most often once a week). Always check the exact time on the server's site.

What if I log in 6 hours after the wipe?

Do not panic. There are still base spots left, just further from the roads. Head deeper into the forest or the mountains, put down a compact base and catch up on scrap. Plenty of strong solo players deliberately join late to skip the beach chaos.

Should I gear up for fighting right away?

No. Wipe day is economic. The people who run off to fight with their fists are sitting there with no base and no blueprints by evening. Foundation first, war later.

Which server should a beginner pick for a wipe?

Solo/Duo/Trio with group limits, population 100-200, wipe cycle of 1-2 weeks. On servers like that, wipe day is predictable and 20-man clans are not steamrolling everything in their path.

Conclusion

Wipe day is a marathon, not a sprint. The first 10 minutes decide where you live; the first hour decides whether you survive the night; the first 6 hours decide whether you are the player of the week or a spectator. Work through the checklist, do not play hero on the beach, and put your scrap into blueprints — and by the end of day one you will have a stone base, blueprints and a head start on the whole week. The rest of the wipe is the long game: farms, turrets, raids and clan life.
