Underground Tunnels and Radiation in Rust: The Complete 2026 Guide

Full guide to underground tunnels and radiation in Rust 2026: Military Tunnels, hazmat, lead armor, gas masks, keycards, monument rad levels.

5 min read · 961 words

Introduction

The Military Tunnels are the most profitable and at the same time the most dangerous monument in Rust: ~29 scientists, three levels of keycards and radiation that ticks even through a hazmat. Most new players die there in the first 10 minutes — not from bullets, but from radiation and their own mistakes. But the players who master the tunnels get the best loot in the game every 60 minutes.

This guide covers everything about radiation in Rust and clearing the underground tunnels: protection, numbers, routes and gear. Data from frozen-rust.com, falconrust.com, rust.fandom.com and gameplay.tips.

How radiation works

Radiation comes in spherical zones around monuments. The damage equals the intensity of the zone minus your protection:

  • 25 protection in a 30 rad/s zone = 5 damage per second.
  • The damage ticks every second while you stay in the zone.
  • Some zones (Oil Rig reactor, Underwater Lab) are extreme — 40+ rad/s.

The formula: damage/sec = zone radiation − your protection (minimum 0).

Radiation protection: hazmat, lead, gas mask

Hazmat — the mandatory minimum

  • 25 protection points — the highest value from a single item.
  • Crafted at workbench 2: 5 Tarp + 2 Sewing Kit + 8 HQM.
  • Cheap — keep 3-4 spares at base (a damaged one gives less protection).

Lead armor

  • Helmet/vest/pants give 5 points each, full set = 15.
  • Workbench 3, more expensive, but it stacks: hazmat + full lead set = 40 protection — enough for almost everything.

Gas mask (2 points, 20 cloth + 10 rope) — for early wipe, against light radiation.

Military Tunnels: step-by-step clear

What is inside

  • An underground 3-card puzzle: green → blue → red.
  • 2 fuses to power it up.
  • ~29 scientists — the densest NPC population in the game.
  • Radiation 11+ at the entrance, 26+ deeper in — a full hazmat is mandatory, and deep inside it ticks even through the hazmat.
  • 1 recycler (outside), no workbench.

Gear

  • A Tier-2 rifle (AK/LR-300) + 150+ rounds.
  • Full hazmat (+ rad pills or Anti-Rad Tea for the deep sections).
  • Plenty of medkits.

Tactics

  1. Enter from the outside through the main entrance; the recycler is outside — recycle the extra stuff before you leave.
  2. Corner-pull: drag scientists out 1-2 at a time around corners, do not fight in the open central halls.
  3. A full clear takes <8 minutes, otherwise the scientists respawn.
  4. The puzzle: green card → blue → red (insert the fuses into their slots).

Is it worth going solo?

Brutal, but doable: a solo with an AK and some experience clears the tunnels in 6-8 minutes. For beginners — go duo/trio: one holds the corridor, the other loots.

Launch Site: radiation + tank

  • The main building always adds extra radiation — drink water (water removes radiation better than pills).
  • 9 scientists + the patrolling Bradley tank.
  • The largest monument in the game, the best loot, high radiation.

Cargo Ship: the deadly horn

  • After the warning horn the radiation turns lethal — leave the ship.
  • You need diving gear if you do not have an RHIB (boat).

Tips

  1. Learn the routes: entrances are safer, loot rooms and reactors have the highest radiation. Veterans memorize the safe corridors and walk around the hot zones.
  2. Rad Pills and Anti-Rad Tea remove accumulated radiation and are mandatory for deep zones.
  3. Do not wear a hazmat in a fight — it has no armor value. Take it off before PvP, put it on for clearing NPCs.
  4. Recycle on the way out: Military Tunnels gives a lot of components — turn them into scrap right at the entrance.
  5. Do not clear it at prime time — the tunnels attract PvP groups waiting for "pre-packed loot".

FAQ

How much protection do I need for the tunnels?

25+ (a hazmat). Deep inside the radiation is 26+ — it ticks even in a hazmat, so bring rad pills or Anti-Rad Tea. With a hazmat + lead set (40) you are comfortable everywhere.

Where do I get a hazmat?

Craft it at WB2: 5 Tarp + 2 Sewing Kit + 8 HQM. Or find one in monument crates, or buy it from vendors.

How do I clear radiation fast?

Drinking water removes radiation better than pills. Rad Pills and Anti-Rad Tea remove it instantly. Water is slower, but free.

Can I run the tunnels without keycards?

Yes, but you will only get the outer loot (the crates in the corridors). All three loot rooms (green/blue/red) are locked behind cards + fuses.

What do I do if the radiation is killing me and I am far from the exit?

Drink water, chew rad pills and move toward the exit in a zigzag (minimize your time in the zone). Do not panic — panic kills faster than radiation.

Conclusion

Radiation is not an "annoyance", it is a mechanic you have to respect: count your protection, carry water and pills, know the zones. Military Tunnels is the best "paycheck" of the wipe if you clear it properly: corner-pulling, an 8-minute timer, a full hazmat. Master the tunnels and you have an endless source of Tier-3 loot and scrap every 60 minutes. And once you learn to combine a hazmat with lead armor, Oil Rig and Underwater Lab open up too.
